This is the first post to the News category of the site blog. It's taken me a couple weeks to get in the swing of things, to get the roundup and site blog actually going but I think I have it now. The blog roundup is supposed to cover learning things like tutorials, inspiration, design theory, etc whereas the news section is supposed to cover school news, designer/illustrator showcases, etc. There is a lot less of this type of stuff coming out on the internet on a daily basis so there will probably only be one or two of these posts a week. Without further ado...it's time to start this category :)

To summarize from the previous weeks, information I put into the roundups instead of this category: Irving Penn famous fashion photographer died in his 90's, there was a huge rally in the U.S. for a Fashion Caucus to be created in Washington, there is a Fashion Scholarship Fund dedicated to getting students internships, scholarships and mentorships, there is a new 10,000 sqft Fashion Incubator space in New York, a new 100% student-run fashion magazine called LUX has been launched, by now everyone should be aware of the Royal Mail strike, etc etc, plus I've posted a bunch of links to interviews and from now on those will go here.

Today let's start with the news that Versace is cutting a lot of jobs and expecting losses. What does this mean to a fashion student? Well, they've got less jobs available but usually when budgets for paid employees get cut with businesses involved in art and design, you tend to see more free internships and work placements offered.

Students who study fashion at Columbia University make up the largest fashion program in the mid-west US. Only, they aren't actually a program. They have previously been a part of the Art & Design and Arts, Entertainment, and Media Management departments but now they are getting their own Fashion Design department.

We'll be seeing a change soon as Armani organizes future staff to replace him. Remember, as people move up someone has to take their places. Look for past interns to be offered positions and stiffer competition for the student internships that are available due to all this extra publicity on staffing.

“'Concept to Consumer' is the theme of the new lab in the Institute of Apparel Management (IAM) [developed with help from Tukatech, makers of many digital garment production products], which will train students and apparel industry professionals how to work digitally at every stage of the apparel production process."

If you like old-style fashion illustration (i.e. pre computer and pre solid coloured marker styles) you will like Wolfgang Joop. Wow, that's all I can say.

The Designer Direction website out of New Zealand is celebrating 6 months. Their mission is much the same as our mission here at FSO except they're more localized to NZ. In fact I even emailed them a couple months ago about collaboration but never heard back...oh well, c'est la vie as they say. I still think you should go give them your support.

I learn a great deal from the blogs and news-sites that I follow but it sure does take a long time to go through them. In the FSO Blog Roundup my goal is to share several times a week the highlights from these websites. Let me do the crawling for you! Subscribe or visit FSO often and get a near daily dose of great info from hundreds of fashion, textiles, fashion school, and business sources. Don't forget to add your blog to the directories so that I can follow it too!

Sometimes this little summary looks better if there is no border around it. If you think it would look better on your website without a border find the code that says
